Hockey: a game of tiny goals, high flying action, and the occasional fight. Two BSHS students, seniors Garrett Bowers and Brennan Caume, recently played in the biggest hockey game they have ever experienced: the state championship.
It was a huge confidence booster for senior Garrett Bowers.
“It showed us that we can play at a higher level, and we can make it and compete at a higher level,” Bowers said.
Tensions ran high for Bowers towards the end of the season.
“I was a little nervous that we weren’t going to go very far in the tournament but then we started pulling it together at the end of the season and felt good,” Bowers said.
This was the first time the JR. Mavericks have ever been to the state championship.
“It meant a lot to us. Our coach was very proud of us and we took it seriously and tried our hardest,” senior Brennan Caume said.
Playing hockey for 15 years has taught Caume many lessons, one of which is that team comes first.
“In the locker room we are a team, and we consider ourselves brothers,” Caume said.
Caume also knows that being close means fighting through adversity.
“(If) we wanted to get through this, we just had to focus and do whatever we needed to do to get through,” Caume said.
Caume is excited for his next step after high school. While many may not know, there are opportunities in the Midwest for athletes to play hockey.
“I’m going to Missouri State to play hockey there,” Caume said.
Thought the end of the season normally means sadness and reflection, Caume is thankful for the opportunity and the lessons that hockey has given him.
“Knowing that was my last game possibly was upsetting,” Caume said, adding, “being on a team sets you up for life. I feel like I’m ready for college and meeting new people just through that team and the bonds we have made.”
