Taking advantage of one of the many excellent programs offered at Summit Tech, senior Will Metz has begun his career prep in a major way.
“Cybersecurity is a thriving industry, with more and more of the world going digital, the ability to navigate the ever changing coding landscape is an invaluable skill,” Metz said.
Metz has been working with computers for a very long time and his interests have steadily continued to expand. Metz feels fortunate to have been exposed to coding from a young age in an interesting and interactive way.
“I’ve been working with computers ever since middle school. I was in the STRETCH program and we liked to use scratch [a block-based visual programming language] whenever we got the chance,” Metz said.
Once Metz began to learn programing, he was hooked. He dedicated time and effort to refining his abilities. It’s thanks to the availability of technology in BSSD that Metz had the opportunity to explore his interests in depth.
“I took all of the programing classes offered in middle school and high school,” Metz said, “I participated whenever and wherever I could.”
Metz recognised the importance of narrowing down his focus in order to get a stable career within the industry, and a well paying one at that
“When I saw that Summit Tech had a cybersecurity class I knew I wanted to do something more focused than just general programing,” Metz said. “Cybersecutiy does tend to make more money and there are more job opportunities with it.”
Ever since joining the program, Metz’s schedule has been packed with activity. His schedule is a bit more specialized than the average student, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“We only have the first four hours here at the high school, and it’s switched if you have the morning shift,” Metz said. “Once we get to Summit Tech, it’s basically one long class period where we work on honing our skills.”
One aspect of the program that Metz found particularly alluring was the promise of certification that came with the cybersecurity program.
“Almost all of the courses there will offer some kind offer some degree of certification preparation,” Metz said, “After the course you can go out and take a certification test. It looks great on resumes and college applications.”
Overall, Metz couldn’t be happier with his decision to participate in the Summit Tech.. With technology steadily becoming more and more a part of both peoples personal and professional lives, Metz’s future looks bright, and he has the cybersecurity program to thank.
