The vending machines at Blue Springs High School are now closed except during lunch, which has frustrated many students. However, the administration and staff support this decision.
Uncle T believes that turning off the vending machines is a great idea. He states, “We are adults now. The vending machines are available before school, during lunch, and after school. It’s about time management—students need to make adjustments. They are here for lessons, not snacks. Having access to the vending machines is a privilege.”
While Uncle T acknowledges that students may be hungry, he emphasizes that this policy will teach them an important life lesson about managing their time.
Principal Wes McCubbin adds, “This change has been beneficial; students are getting to class quicker.” He notes that it helps staff, too: “Teachers aren’t interrupted by late arrivals while trying to instruct their classes.” He is aware, however, that students desire snacks throughout the day.
Despite the staff’s agreement that turning off the vending machines promotes punctuality, there are concerns about the impact on students. Let’s hear from a couple of students.
Jasper Watson, an 11th grader at Blue Springs High, expressed, “This policy mainly affects diabetic students who may need sugar to manage their blood sugar levels during the day. They should have the ability to access food when they need it. Also, teenagers often experience fluctuating appetites and should be able to grab a snack if necessary.” Jasper recognizes the benefits of getting to class faster but believes that students should still have access to snacks when needed.
Another student, Karisen Dillon, voiced a different perspective: “I don’t think the vending machines should be turned off. It’s not beneficial for the vending machine owners or the students.” He noted that having the machines available generates positive revenue for the school and helps students maintain their energy levels throughout the day.
So, for now, manage your time and grab your snacks before or after school or during lunch.
