Additional PE course offerings appealing

One of the most highly anticipated changes of 2019/2020 school year will be the new Physical Education classes offered. The new courses offered will include Officiating of Sports, Fitness Walking I & II, and Yoga Principles and Practice I & II.

Anna Cole, current BSHS PE teacher, will instruct the courses. Along with teaching the classes, she was also a part of the decision to change the titles of other physical education classes, such as changing “PE” to “Team Sports” to clearly state the objective of the class.

In addition to course title changes, the new courses were widely requested by students that wanted more options.

“I think our school district does a great job of offering various courses in every department,” Cole said.

The courses will be required to have a similar curriculum as BSS, which means the joint staff members will sit down and make adjustments to the courses as the year progresses. One of the main goals with renaming and adding new courses is to entice students to take more at-school PE than at-home PE.

“We are trying to give the students what they want/have asked for,” Cole said, “The main goal is to offer courses that students would enjoy and look forward to coming to everyday. I believe our school will do whatever is necessary to make exercise more fun and desirable to students,” Cole finished.

Although BSHS anticipates that the classes will make at-school PE more popular than at-home PE, they do expect some courses to be more popular than others.

“A lot of us think that the Fitness Walking class will be popular because it is a class that doesn’t require students to dress out. I know in my classes currently, students aren’t fans of having to change clothes; some are though! It just depends on the students.

Students are not the only ones eager to start their new courses; teachers are also eager to learn their new course material and relay it to the students.

“I know I’ve heard a lot of students excited about the Yoga classes too! I am just as eager to see what I’ll be teaching next year as the students are eager to see what classes they get,” Cole said.

With all the new and exciting changes coming to the home of the Wildcats, the new Physical Education classes will be trial and error, offering students more enticing and inviting ways to get fit.
