FBLA: business ethics and bake sales

“My favorite thing about FBLA so far has been the state competition I went to last year. It was just a lot of fun to be there with a lot of people that had the same goals as I did.” -Olivia McKay, Senior.

Future business hopefuls built a solid foundation by joining FBLA, a club where students learn about business ethics and compet in competitions, either solo or with a team.

Senior Brett Portlance competes in FBLA and is usually with a team of his friends.

“It’s a fun challenge to do with your friends or solo, but I normally have a team. We are given a situation and some things we have to fix and 20 minutes to come up with a ten minute pitch,” Portlance said.

Senior Olivia McKay, a three year FBLA member, enjoys both the state competition and working with people of similar interests.

“My favorite thing about FBLA so far has been the state competition I went to last year. It was just a lot of fun to be there with a lot of people that had the same goals as I did,” McKay said.

FBLA could help students in marketing classes with their “professional development points.”

“Joining was beneficial for a class I was in and I saw it as another way to get involved,” Portlance said. “In marketing and business classes you need to earn what are called ‘professional development points,’ which you get from doing things to better yourself essentially,” he added.

Portlance and McKay are FBLA co-captions, they usually help run FBLA meetings.

“Co-captions help run meetings and do whatever Mr. Moss needs. Usually it’s distributing cheese dip,” Portlance joked.

FBLA is having a bake sale through March 25th to the 29th during WCH at the Cat Walk and cafeteria.

“We figured being business people why not make a profit off of people liking cookies and stuff to help a good cause of course. The March of Dimes is a non profit organization that we go and partner with every year that goes to help mothers with premature babies,” Moss said.

FBLA students benefit from the experience and the college application boost.
