Boys Golf Stays in the Green
“One thing I try to focus on (is) your next shot–not your last shot,” Rooney said. He added that “worrying about my score and not just playing golf can throw me off my game.”

After qualifying four athletes to state and with a second place conference trophy in hand, the golf team has made their mark on this post season and looks to continue that hot streak.
On Monday, district play at Fred Arbanas Golf Course ended with seniors Seth Wildoner, Blake Whetstone, sophomore Blake Rooney, and junior Ben Podjenski moving onto sectionals. Whetstone felt only jubilation at the day’s end.
“I was instantly relieved when they called my name,” Whetstone said. Also an all-district selection, Whetstone looks to add to his resume at the state level.
“It put a smile on my face when I was given the all-district medal, Whetstone said.
Much like Whetstone, sophomore Blake Rooney was also happy when he earned a medal for his play.
“When I finished my conference round I wasn’t thinking about medaling; it just kind of surprised me when I realized that I might have a shot at it,” Rooney said.
As he finishes his senior year, Whetstone leaves behind some important advice.
“I try to tell the guys to take it one hole at a time. Each hole is brand new and should be treated as so,” Whetstone said.
Rooney, who looks up to the players that have spent some time on the green, takes what Whetstone said to heart.
“One thing I try to focus on (is) your next shot–not your last shot,” Rooney said. He added that “worrying about my score and not just playing golf can throw me off my game.”
Whetstone also noted that it’s all in the mindset. As a player who changed sports, he had to focus on his technique as well.
“I came from baseball so my swing was all kind of messed up, but after commiting to playing golf I was able to get to where I am today,” Whetstone said.
The ball has been placed on the tee, and the team is ready to roll with a lot of momentum as the boys look forward to a great showing at sectionals at Tiffany Springs May sixth with state being held at Bolivar on May 13/14.
