The Blue Springs High School Boys Swim Team is making waves this season, currently holding an impressive record of 7-3.
Known for their commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics, the team fosters a positive environment where swimmers can thrive under the guidance of a dedicated coaching staff.
Standout swimmer John Jackson, junior, values the camaraderie on the team, stating, “I get to meet so many people and build bonds with other swimmers.” Jackson prefers swimming freestyle, appreciating its technical challenges and the joy of mastering new techniques, like galloping.
Jeremiah Wellman also enjoys freestyle, finding it a straightforward stroke. Wellman enjoys many aspects of being a part of this group, saying, “I like practice because we get to have fun with our friends,” believing that swimming is a fantastic way to improve skills while enjoying time with teammates.
His senior teammate, Bradyn Gilstorf, shares similar sentiments, particularly enjoying the fun of away meets and the unique experiences they offer, despite a particular dislike for one competition in Carthage. “The brotherly love and friendly insults keep things lively,” he adds.
Senior and future college swimmer, Brady Murdick, reflects on his high school swimming career: “At Conference sophomore year, John Bellinghausen was a good mentor to me, and that’s when I realized that I could become something more than what I am capable of.”
Murdick has had many positive experiences over the years as a swimmer, but one of his recent standouts was when he got top five in both of his events at Individual’s last month in Columbia, and he expects to continue to drop his time.
This 2024 swim team is represented by swimmers from all grades. Coach Bigham reflects positively on the season so far, noting impressive performances and several unexpected wins. “The guys have done a really good job racing,” he says, adding that the newcomers bring valuable experience: “The youngsters are looking really strong and should be great for the future of the program.”
As the team gears up for the conference championships, Bigham emphasizes the importance of sharpening techniques and maintaining a solid training schedule.
As the season progresses, tapering becomes essential after months of intense training. This process allows swimmers to rest and recover, ensuring they are at peak performance for the state competition in St. Louis.
With a supportive community and a shared passion for the sport, the Blue Springs High School Boys Swim Team is not just competing; they are cultivating friendships, discipline, and a love for swimming that will carry them into future seasons.
